First Baptist Church and Pandemic Flu

Since May 2006, First Baptist Church has partnered with Marion County Emergency Management for pandemic flu planning. First Baptist Church also serves as the alternative medical treatment site.


The Florida Department of Health provides public health information and updates on H1N1 Swine flu.  The information line is available from 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern, 7 days a week.  Information is available in English, Spanish and Creole.

The Florida Surgeon General provides these recommendations:

  • People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza, to others in the community.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Wash hands frequently to lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
  • People experiencing cough, fever and fatigue, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, should contact their physician.
  • If you think you have influenza, please call your health care provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in their office, emergency department or stay home.

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. There are many things you can to do prevent getting and spreading influenza:

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
